Below are descriptions and estimated time commitments for the various roles that PACE Fellows can take up for the 2020-2021 academic year.


PACE Leadership Team Member

Role Description: The PACE Program Leadership Team Members assist in the development and execution of all PACE programming. Specific tasks include: tracking PACE program participation, developing, distributing, and analyzing program surveys, leading logistical planning such as room reservations and scheduling, maintaining and updating the website based on developed materials prior to and after major program sessions, and assistance in the development of program materials. Additionally, PACE Leadersship Team members will assist in leading several Fire Up Friday program sessions and work with Leadership Team Chairs to develop at least one of their own Fire Up Friday program sessions. PACE Leadersship Team Members are expected and encouraged to share personal insights and perspectives on the current state of the student population, providing program suggestions and improvements where seen fit. Two students are recommended to hold this position.

Role Requirements: UCI Physics & Astronomy graduate student. One year tenure within the department is recommended. Completion of the Mentoring Excellence Program (or concurrent enrollment) is required. Must be in good academic standing.

Estimated Time Requirements: Up to 12 hours monthly


Fire Up Friday Mentor

Role Description: The PACE Fire Up Friday Mentor provides mentorship and solidarity with our first-year graduate cohort during the Fire Up Friday (FUF) monthly session. Mentors are expected to attend all of the FUF Pre-Meetings, complete any pre-work necessary for personal insight, and attend all of the FUF sessions. Missing one session or pre-meeting for any reason is excused, and other necessary absences can be accommodated when the absence is due to TA schedule and or academic travel. Additional details on mentor expectations can be found here. Our goal is to have 1 FUF Mentor for every 2-3 first-year grads.

Role Requirements: UCI Physics & Astronomy graduate student. One year tenure within the department is required. Completion of the Mentoring Excellence Program (or concurrent enrollment) is recommended. Attendance to Mentor Orientation in September of the starting year is required.

Estimated Time Requirements: 3-6 hours monthly


Exceleration Mentor

Role Description: The PACE Exceleration Mentor provides mentorship and solidarity with our first-year graduate cohort during self-scheduled meetings - monthly meetings are required. Suggested topics of discussion and questions for meetings will be provided. Additional details on mentor expectations can be found here.

Role Requirements: UCI Physics & Astronomy graduate student. One year tenure within the department is required. Completion of the Mentoring Excellence Program (or concurrent enrollment) is recommended. Attendance to Mentor Orientation in September of the starting year is required.
